  17. <p>A heart ailment may end the meteoric career of the Celtics'
  18. Reggie Lewis
  19. </p>
  20. <p>     The Boston Celtics basketball team just finished a sad, hard
  21. season: the revered Larry Bird retired at the start; the always
  22. dependable Kevin McHale retired at the end; and during the
  23. playoffs, the team lost its captain and hope for the future,
  24. Reggie Lewis. The 27-year-old forward collapsed during a
  25. postseason game at Boston Garden. Lewis, who is the Celtics'
  26. leading scorer, bravely returned to the game before weakening
  27. and finally heading for the bench for good. A few days later,
  28. a team physician delivered a disturbing diagnosis: Lewis had
  29. "focal cardiomyopathy," an ailment that damages an area of the
  30. heart and causes it to beat irregularly. Hank Gathers of Loyola
  31. Marymount University, another celebrated young basketball
  32. player, died from cardiomyopathy in 1990. Lewis said he would
  33. seek a second opinion. And Celtics fans, stunned by the loss,
  34. looked around desperately for another hoops hero.
